Procida  the island of the Postman

Procida 'La Corricella' Bild von Vito Maltese

Procida, like Ischia, was formed by the Phlegrean volcanic activity and  is located between Naples and Ischia, which is just 15 minutes far by hydrofoil.

Procida is the smallest of the Parthenopean islands (less than 4 km2 ), with highly irregular morphology but essentially flat: the highest part of the island is the hill of Terra Murata (90 mt).

It still maintains the fascinating scenary of a picturesque fishing village: small and quiet streets, brightly colourful  houses  welcome the visitors to the island from the sea.

Very tranquil and far from the mass tourism route, Procida’s nature is still uncontaminated and fascinating, the sea is clear and the beaches (the most famous one is La Chiaiolella) are very quite.

Procida is surrounded by a rich Mediterranean vegetation, which becomes even richer and luxuriant on the small isle of Vivara, a WWF natural reserve, linked by a footbridge to the main island.

Wine, artichokes and lemons are typical products of the island; the famous ‘Procida lemons’ grow bigger that normal lemons, with an interior pulp very sweet and delicious. They are good to eat for dessert with sugar or cut into pieces in salad dishes. Procida lemons were included in the list of the Italian Typical Products.

Procida is bound to ancient religious traditions the most important of which are tied to the period of Holy Week before Good Friday.

Important summer events:  La sagra del mare (Sea festival), with the election of the Graziella a young woman wearing  the typical customary clothes of the island, and the ‘Premio letterario Elsa Morante’, a  literary award dedicated to the writer  who set on the island her famous novel ‘Arthur’s Island’.
